Background:  The road that eventually led to a career in video calibration first revealed itself to me nearly 20 years ago, when I was transferred to Japan to establish a local business operation for the financial information company I worked for at the time. During my first visit to the Ginza shopping district in Tokyo, I came upon the Sony Building. I eventually found my way to the top floor, where a small theater with a 100-inch screen provided a spectacular demonstration of the world’s first commercially available HDTV system.

I was awestruck — the video bug had bitten me and that bite has proved lasting.

I continued on the international business management track a while longer, but I always knew that some way, some how, I had to get involved in the fast-growing world of home theater and high-definition video. After returning to the US and a brief, but intriguing dalliance with something called “the dotcom boom,” I found myself at a career crossroads. That’s right, I was a little to close to the blast point when the fledgling Internet economy went BOOM — the net result being that I was jobless (and so, it seemed, was the economy).

At this point, I knew it was time to act on my Ginza epiphany. So, in March 2002, I enrolled myself in the ISF training course, flew to Orlando, Florida, and haven’t looked back. 15 years later, I’ve calibrated more than 2000 displays — traditional “tube” TVs, rear-projectors, flat panels, two-piece projection systems, video walls, embracing all of today’s most popular technologies — CRT, DLP, plasma, LCD, LED, LCoS, OLED, and QLED.

Coverage Area:  While the St. Louis metro area is my “home” market, I also conduct regular calibration tours (at least twice annually) to the major population areas in:

  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

Equipment:  I own and maintain the following calibration test equipment:

  • Murideo 6G 4K and HDR-compatible reference-standard signal generator
  • Accupel DVG-5000 reference standard digital signal generators
  • Accupel HDG-3000 reference-standard digital/analog signal generator
  • Gretag-Macbeth i1 Pro spectraphotometer
  • Xrite i1 Pro spectraphotometer
  • Xrite i1 Display Pro colorimeter
  • CalMAN Ultimate 2017 calibration suite
  • ControlCAL calibration software for ISFccc-compatible displays, including licenses for all supported Panasonic plasma, Pioneer Kuro plasma and Sharp Elite displays

Training & Affiliations:  I am a graduate of the Imaging Science Foundation introductory training course and have also taken ISF instruction in CRT front projector setup and calibration. I also attended an ISF refresher course at the Datacolor headquarters in Lawrenceville, New Jersey in early 2007. I am also THX Video calibration-certified.

I also own and manage the ISF Forum, an online, closed-user group web site designed to provide ISF calibrators with the day-to-day support, technical information and shared calibrator experiences needed to properly calibrate the growing range of commercially available display products. From day one, the ISF Forum community has been an instrumental part of my continuing education in video calibration, and I consider it a privilege as ISF Forum owner to be able to assist other calibrators in our shared quest to provide our customers with the best possible service.

ISF Forum membership is restricted to working calibrators who have successfully completed ISF training and who own the required professional equipment. Of course, all Lion AV affiliated video consultants are Charter Members of the ISF Forum.
