Why Calibrate?

Professional video calibration helps ensure that a display, projector, or theater system reproduces images as accurately and consistently as possible.

Modern video systems are capable of excellent performance, but factory settings are often designed for showroom impact rather than accurate image reproduction. Calibration adjusts the system so grayscale, color, gamma, EOTF, shadow detail, HDR behavior, and signal-chain performance are aligned with established video standards.

Accurate Images Require More Than Brightness and Color

A good picture is not simply a bright picture or a colorful picture. Accurate video performance depends on the relationship between many parts of the image, including black level, white level, grayscale neutrality, color accuracy, gamma, HDR tone mapping, and the behavior of the complete video signal path.

When these elements are not properly adjusted, images can appear too dark, too bright, overly blue, overly warm, oversaturated, washed out, or inconsistent from one source or format to another.

What Calibration Improves

The “Willing Suspension of Disbelief”

When a video system is poorly adjusted, the viewer may notice problems instead of becoming absorbed in the content. Faces may look unnatural, dark scenes may lose detail, whites may appear tinted, and the image may feel artificial.

Proper calibration helps reduce those distractions. The goal is to make the technology disappear so the viewer can focus on the story, the performance, and the creative intent behind the image.

Calibration for Today’s Video Systems

Today’s systems are more complex than older display technologies. SDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, wide color gamut, laser projectors, video processors, streaming devices, UHD Blu-ray players, and advanced display modes all affect final image performance.

Professional calibration evaluates how these parts work together in the actual room, with the actual screen, projector or display, sources, processor, and viewing environment.

A Standards-Based Approach

Lion Audio Video Consultants Inc. uses professional measurement tools, established video standards, and practical system evaluation to optimize image performance. Calibration is not guesswork and it is not simply copying settings from another display.

Every room, display, projector, screen, processor, and source chain behaves differently. Proper calibration is performed on the actual system being used.

See Common Calibration Problems

Many picture-quality problems are easier to understand when shown visually. LionAV has preserved examples showing how calibration can correct issues such as inaccurate grayscale, color errors, poor shadow detail, and other visible image problems.
